Power steering question

The first seal kit that I bought had paper that came with it that stated that if there is an "X" anywhere in the casting number then it requires square cut O ring set, round O rings will not work and it will leak. I know that O rings will become flat over time but the seal that I took out was definitely made, almost in the shape of a square. Kind of unusual but that what it was. It could be a Federal pump but then why would all the parts stores give me the same thing when I tell them it is for a Roadrunner. They just look it up and say, here you go. Beats me ?????
