Question about galvanized hardware cloth

May. 13, 2024

Understanding Galvanized Hardware Cloth

Galvanized hardware cloth, or mesh, is highly effective as long as its coating remains intact. The primary function of galvanization is to prevent rust; if the zinc coating is scratched or otherwise damaged, the rust is confined to the affected area. Generally, thicker wires offer greater strength, with lower gauge numbers indicating thicker wires. Most users find that 16 gauge wire is sufficiently robust for most purposes, except in environments where bears are present. Chicken wire is insufficient for protecting against predators. A 1/2 inch mesh prevents snake entry and offers protection against other intruders as well. Conversely, 1-inch mesh does not deter snakes and allows raccoons or opossums to reach through.

Best Practices for Working with Hardware Cloth

The most reliable method to bend hardware cloth involves using two 2x4s as a makeshift brake to achieve a precise 90-degree bend. A 45-degree bend might suffice for sub-ground protection against digging predators. Some methods involve laying the cloth on the surface, but this necessitates enough coverage to compel predators to dig a tunnel, a task they generally avoid.

This type of fencing can be installed inside split rail and other fences to keep dogs and horses separate. Although I can't recall the brand name, another option to Redbrand offers thicker, hot-dipped galvanization. We have some fences that are over ten years old and still in good condition.
