Before diving into the various flooring options available for shops, it is important to note that there are numerous flooring materials on the market, each with unique benefits and drawbacks. Whether searching for durability, comfort, or aesthetics, making an informed decision is essential. A popular choice among many is a combination of epoxy coatings and rubber mats, as they tend to balance practicality and visual appeal.

First and foremost, it’s crucial to emphasize that THERE IS NO PERFECT FLOORING SOLUTION! Every flooring type has its own set of drawbacks. For my workspace, I found that the combination of epoxy and rubber mats provided the best outcomes with the least issues. This solution seemed to resonate with much of the feedback I received from fellow woodworking enthusiasts.

It is useful to consider the conditions that your flooring will face, and how your personal preferences will influence your choice. In my case, living in the desert means that humidity is not a massive concern, but the aesthetic aspect definitely influenced my decisions along the way.

Rubber Floor Tiles

I previously covered my thoughts on rubber flooring, but I ultimately discarded it due to a few key reasons. A major concern was the appearance; I was hesitant to risk having a dark floor affecting my workspace’s light reflection and overall video quality. While lighter tiles are an option, they almost doubled the cost, which wasn’t appealing to me.

The weight of the rubber tiles also posed a logistical challenge. Having to install heavy tiles would take considerable time and effort that I preferred to allocate to setting up tools instead.

Moreover, the risks associated with rubber floors, such as tool mobility and potential damage from solvents or chemicals, raised several red flags for me. Overall, the uncertainty surrounding rubber flooring made me favor a more tried-and-true solution.

Vinyl Flooring

Though I considered vinyl flooring at one point, the reality of its installation costs brought me back down to earth. The quote I received was alarmingly high, exceeding $10,000. Given the heat in my shop, I also read that seams in vinyl could eventually become problematic, which further pushed me away from the option.

Solid/Engineered Hardwood Flooring

As much as solid wood flooring can be visually appealing, the temperature and humidity fluctuations in my shop made it a poor choice. Even engineered hardwood has its limitations in such an environment, as it often does not hold up well to inconsistent conditions.

When considering both hardwood options, the costs of hiring installers further deterred me. While wood flooring could’ve provided an aesthetic upgrade, ultimately, the issues surrounding wood movement and costs pushed it off my list.

Laminate Flooring

Despite having experience installing laminate floors, I found their sound unacceptable. Additionally, a layer of dust can quickly become hazardous on laminate, which was a concern for my workspace.

Sleepers and OSB or Plywood

I consider this an option many love, but I had my reservations. The idea of drilling into my new concrete slab made me uneasy. Plus, covering such a large area in flooring seemed like a daunting task, especially when I had other woodworking priorities. I also couldn’t help but think about potential resale value, particularly since a plywood floor might not attract future buyers.

Epoxy Coatings + Rubber Mats

And now for my top choice. After visiting my parents’ garage, which had an epoxy-coated floor, I was impressed by how bright and inviting it seemed under natural light. In contrast, the dull appearance of raw concrete didn’t give me the same uplifting feel.

From a resale standpoint, an epoxy floor massively outperforms an unfinished concrete surface. It boasts tremendous durability, making it a worthy long-term investment for any shop. With the cost around $2.40 per square foot installed, this option is quite economical relative to its benefits.

However, since epoxy flooring lacks cushioning, I will incorporate rubber mats in tool zones for comfort. This arrangement could also mask the discomfort from standing for long periods. I'll opt for quality rubber mats that won't easily shift during use.
