Voltage Outputs
The cable voltage rating is an important fact to know prior to choosing a hipot tester. Typical VLF testing models will have cable ratings of 15kV, 25kV and up. Make sure to use a tester that has a higher KV output than the cable being tested.

Waveform Output
Two waveform outputs are available for this type of hipot testing: the sine wave and cosine rectangular wave. The cosine form is suitable for cable hipoting but is not favored for testing tan delta or partial discharge applications. When testing rotating machinery, the VLF model must produce sine wave outputs so it is better to choose a sine wave for that purpose.

Model Design
The electrical test equipment you choose should be easy to use as well as portable. The smaller and lighter model available the easier it will be for field use although some models are made with two parts to make them easier to carry and transport by a single person. Durability is also a consideration especially for heavy duty testing on high voltage transformers.
