In an ideal scenario, regular brushing would be sufficient to maintain your teeth's pearly white appearance between dental visits. However, for many, especially coffee enthusiasts, this isn't always the case. This often leads us to drugstores in search of whitening products to brighten our smiles, without fully understanding these products and their workings.

Understanding Tooth Enamel and Stains

Dr. Matthew Messina, a spokesperson for the American Dental Association (ADA), explains, "Tooth enamel is a crystal. Under a powerful microscope, it resembles chicken wire (or wire mesh)." Removing stains from the enamel matrix is similar to extracting dirt from chicken wire. "Whitening involves opening the matrix to bubble out the color, stain, and then closing it back up," Dr. Messina elaborates.

This is where peroxide plays a crucial role. Dr. Messina notes that peroxide is responsible for the bubbling effect, and the active ingredients in whitening kits are hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide (a diluted form of hydrogen peroxide). “Carbamide peroxide is chosen for its stability,” explains Dr. Neil Hadaegh, a cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills, California. "This ensures consistent product quality." Additionally, most over-the-counter whitening products contain extra ingredients to enhance taste.

The Role of Peroxide and Professional Whitening

Peroxide is also the main component in professional dental whitening treatments. The primary difference is the concentration. "In-office treatments use a stronger whitening agent because the gum tissues can be protected, whereas over-the-counter products must be milder to prevent potential gum tissue burns," says Dr. Messina. Professionals can take necessary precautions to safeguard gum tissues, ensuring the whitening agent affects only the tooth enamel.

Choosing the Right Whitening Kit

According to Dr. Messina, all over-the-counter peroxide-based whiteners yield similar results if you adhere to the instructions. One ingredient to avoid is hydrated silica, which can damage tooth enamel and gum tissue. Dr. Giri Palani, a dentist in Beverly Hills, advises prioritizing ease of use and proper storage, preferably in a refrigerator, to extend the product's shelf life.

Dr. Messina recommends using a kit for seven to ten days initially, and then for maintenance every other week. However, it's best to consult your dentist before starting any whitening regimen. "Whitening should only be done in a healthy mouth," Dr. Messina states, advising against it for those with cavities or periodontal disease.

Top Drugstore Teeth-Whitening Kits

Once you've consulted with your dentist, consider trying one of these over-the-counter kits:

Crest 3D White Whitestrips Professional Effects, $44.99 (target.com)

Crest Whitestrips are a well-known option recommended by Dr. Hadaegh and Dr. Palani for achieving results close to professional whitening.

Plus White 5 Minute Dental Whitening Kit, $11.49 (riteaid.com)

Lana Rozenberg, DDS, a cosmetic dentist in New York, supports Plus White's 5 Minute system for its minimal tooth sensitivity and ease of use.

Dr. Collins All White 22% Bleaching System, $20.49 (target.com)

Dr. Rozenberg believes trays and strips are more effective than pens because of their prolonged contact with teeth. Custom-fit trays from a dentist are ideal, but drugstore trays are an alternative with careful use.

Walgreens Extreme Whitening Wraps, $14.99 (walgreens.com)

Dr. Messina emphasizes that prolonged whitener contact is vital for effectiveness, making these fitted wraps a good option.

Hager Pharma Mirawhite Oxygen Tooth Whitening Pen, $31.99 (cvs.com)

Though effective, whitening pens can be challenging to use correctly, requiring isolated teeth and extensive mouth opening.

CVS Platinum Whitening Kit

Dr. Rozenberg advises that higher peroxide concentrations, such as the 25% carbamide peroxide in this kit, offer effective whitening but may increase tooth sensitivity and gum irritation if misused. Always follow the instructions carefully. Happy whitening!
