Understanding Colorants in Natural Soap Coloring in all natural soap – Are they ok? When we say we make all natural soaps, we mean it. For us, this implies limited use of coloring agents. We've consciously avoided using micas and pigments in our soaps. While many believe these components are safe and several sources validate their use, they are not entirely natural. Natural vs. Dyed Mica Powder Natural mica is initially derived from the ground, but to make it vibrant and colorful, additional elements are introduced. These added colors are not natural, which disqualifies micas as a completely natural product for us, and is why we choose not to use them. Mica powders, while hazardous to breathe in, do not pose much threat to users of colored soap. However, the need to enhance their natural appearance with synthetic dyes changes their natural profile. Pigments: Natural and Synthetic While natural pigments like iron oxide do exist, they often come with other compounds that might not be safe. Consequently, most pigments used today are synthesized. Although said to be safe, these synthetic pigments do not meet our criteria for natural products and are excluded from our soap-making process. Safe Colorants There are many FD & C colorants deemed safe for usage; they’re prevalent in processed foods and various cosmetic products. Nonetheless, due to the ambiguity surrounding what makes a product "natural," and the fluctuating safety of these colorants, we have opted to adhere to using plant-based, clay-based, or no colorants. Hence, our soaps maintain a very natural appearance. This may seem "boring" to those seeking decorative artisan soaps, but consistency with our natural ethos is essential. Plant-Based Coloring Agents Several of our soaps do feature some color derived from Alkanet Root, Madder Root, Clove with ground cloves, and activated charcoal. Beyond these, we maintain strict adherence to our natural criteria. Are Natural Soap Colorants Ok? So, when considering coloring in all natural soap – Are they ok? Ultimately, the decision comes down to your comfort and preference. Our priority is to offer a minimally altered, natural product, and that's what we stand by.
