Canvas or not to canvas?

Canvas makes a great winter tent, especially when using a stove inside.

The big thing with canvas is the fire safety issue. You can use canvas around fire with a lot more security. Not that it is fire proof, but more fire retardant. And a lot more fire retardant when a fire retardant is applied to it.

Canvas will also last a lot longer. A canvas tent can last and easy 10-15 years and if taken care of can last 30-40 yrs with out much problem. Nylon tents break down quickly with UV exposure, and also these days are not made to last either. They can't sell you the newest tent if your previous years tents are too well made, so there is a lot of planned obsolescence in modern nylon tents.

Canvas tents tend to have better insulation value also. Another reason they make good winter tents.

You said aside from weight, but related to weight is bulk. Canvas will be much bulkier than nylon tents. So along with weight you get a lot more bulk too.

While not universal, canvas tents tend to have better head room. Most canvas tent designs seem to not just allow sitting up but often allow standing up too. In part I think due to most canvas tents being designed for term longer use. Such as military or hunting or base camps.

And of course canvas tents just have a cool nice feel to them.
