WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW BEFORE BUYING A LED SCREEN?

GUIDE TO CHOOSE AND UNDERSTAND THE TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE OF A LED SCREEN

VIEWING DISTANCE FOR LED SCREENS

The viewing distance is an important value to define the interval between two possible pixels. For example, if we have a 3 x 2m screen, we can choose a pixel pitch of 10 mm if we want an optimal vision from 8 m away. But if we want to reduce its viewing distance, making it closer, then it&#;s better to choose a pixel pitch of 8 mm.

SO, IS IT ALWAYS BETTER TO GET THE SMALLER PIXEL PITCH?

Not really. Remember that smaller pitches are more expensive. If we take the previous example (3×2 m LED screen) and set 10 m viewing distance, the image quality will be the same, whether the pixel pitch is 10 mm or 8 mm. Choosing a smaller pixel when it is not necessary is a waste of money.

LED SCREEN BRIGHTNESS

Advertising LED screens have a higher brightness than LED TVs and other screens. Brightness is measured by using nits or candelas per m2. The higher the luminosity level, the higher the level of brightness.

Screens with higher brightness are pricier and use more electrical power. Hence, it is important to choose a screen with the right brightness for your needs, so you won&#;t pay more for something that is not necessary. Non-weatherproof indoor LED screens use LEDs with lower light output, but water-resistant outdoor LED screens need to use brighter LEDs.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST PIXEL PITCH FOR A LED SCREEN

When buying a LED screen, doubts often arise. One of the most common is how to select the right pixel pitch. It is natural to want to get the best image quality. In fact, it is easy to find examples of  bad pixel pitch choices: distorted images that cannot be perceived correctly at any distance.

Some people (and sellers) believe that distance from the screen is the only variable that matters to get the best image quality. They mistakenly calculate pixel pitch based only on this and do not think about the size of the LED screen.

As technical advice, the first thing you have to do is to calculate the total number of pixels that has the screen we want to buy. The amount cannot be less than 30.000 pixels.

HOW DO WE CALCULATE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PIXELS ON A SCREEN?

Very simple: you can check how many pixels are in one square meter of each pitch in the following table.

For example, if we want a screen of 2×1 m, it&#;s necessary to convert the size into square meters, which is done multiplying the base measurement by the height measurement. The surface of a 2×1 m screen is 2 m2. Now, we have to look for a pixel pitch value that, after being multiplied by the surface size, gives us a value greater than 30,000 pixels. Let&#;s multiply the surface of our screen by the 10 mm pixel pitch (equivalent to 10.000 pixels/m2, according to the previous table). 2 m2 x 10.000 pixels/m2 = 20.000. Therefore, this value would not be valid for video: it would only be suitable for text viewing.

If you still have doubts about the pixel pitch you would need, it is better to get professional advice from experts with a long experience and hundreds of successful projects.

INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LED SCREENS BRIGHTNESS

One of the most common misconceptions is related to the confusion between brightness and weather protection. This error is induced by dishonest sellers who offer expensive and excessive outdoor LED screens to customers who do not need them, just to get a higher commission. The deception consists in not informing that there are indoor screens with higher brightness, that can look as bright and sharp as outdoor screens.

These indoor LED screens do not have weather resistant features because they do not need it. This can save you a lot of money, because it makes the price of the screen much higher. The truth is that screen brightness is completely independent of its weather protection.

WHAT IS THE MAINTENANCE ACCESS OF LED SCREENS?

The maintenance access tells us where you can find and access the elements inside the screen.

Rear maintenance screens require a space behind the screen to get inside access. Sometimes, these screens can incorporate doors that must be fully operative to perform maintenance tasks. If you are installing a rear maintenance LED screen, be sure to leave the space necessary for staff access and door opening.

LED frontal maintenance screens are designed for wall installations or similar, where we will access their internal parts from the front. The frontal maintenance screens are slightly more expensive than those of the rear type, due to the mechanisms they integrate to grant a frontal access.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LED SCREENS

I WANT TO INSTALL A LED SCREEN IN A SHOP WINDOW DISPLAY. WHAT KIND OF SCREEN DO I NEED?

FOR WHICH USES AND LOCATIONS IS AN INDOOR LED SCREEN RECOMMENDED?

Indoor LED screens are a very good option for a large number of locations and uses. Its price and image quality make it a highly demanded product. It is an ideal product for a multitude of uses as long as the ambience luminosity of its location does not exceed the scope of its brightness performance (nits).

WHEN IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO PUT AN OUTDOOR SCREEN IN A SHOP WINDOW?

Indoor LED screens have lower brightness values than outdoor screens. Their attractive price and image quality make them attractive for a wide variety of locations, but for shop windows it is advisable to invest more and purchase outdoor screens to obtain the best image quality in high light conditions.

CAN AN INDOOR LED SCREEN WORK WELL IN A SHOP WINDOW?

Indoor LED screens can work in shop windows that do NOT have problems with direct ambient light. If the shop window receives direct sunlight, outdoor LED screens should be used.

WHAT IS THE REAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUTDOOR AND INDOOR DISPLAYS?

On the one hand we have the environmental protection, the outdoor screens, as their name indicates, are adapted to withstand the most common outdoor environmental conditions. They have a higher weight than indoor screens and their luminosity is much higher than indoor screens because it is considered that they will be in areas exposed to direct sunlight. Logically, taking into account all these features, outdoor screens have a much higher price than indoor screens. Performance of outdoor screens and performance of indoor led screens.

8 things to consider when choosing your LED outdoor ...

Outdoor LED signage has become indispensable for organizations looking to offer relevant, easily updated information, alerts and advertising.

But before purchasing LED outdoor signage for your business, you must ensure you&#;re making a well-informed investment. Your digital signage is likely to last at least 10 years; careful planning will help ensure a successful experience, longer lifetime and lower cost.

Here are eight key factors to consider as you look for the best outdoor LED display screen to meet your needs:

1. Environmental ruggedness

Depending on where your outdoor digital sign is located, you may need to consider how it operates in hot or cold temperatures, as well as in rain, snow, wind, dust and humidity. Against these elements, the design of your screen and its enclosure is critical to the continuous operation and lifespan of the LEDs.

In terms of environmental factors, your first consideration should be removing heat from both the LED elements and their driving electronics. Ask any vendor about their thermal management solution and its ability to maintain LED temperatures within the elemental conditions you anticipate. To protect your signage from the elements, check that the enclosure design meets specifications for resistance to water, dust, humidity, etc. &#; whatever concerns apply to your location.

2. Support every step of the way

Can your potential supplier offer support and advice for the screen&#;s design and permitting process? Will they listen to all stakeholders and design a solution that fits their needs? Can they work with a customer project leader or recommend a qualified installer?

Hopefully, the answer to these questions is yes. You want a partner in this process, not simply a vendor.

3. Maintenance and servicing

Once your LED outdoor signage is installed, routine maintenance and servicing are critical to ensuring it always looks great and lasts as long as possible. Ask your vendor how often calibration is required &#; and how easy it is to accomplish &#; to ensure consistent image quality for years to come.

Similarly, establish how and when the screen will be serviced. Some vendors, such as Samsung, offer a network operations center (NOC) option to constantly monitor your sign and send a technician to fix any issues before you may even be aware of them. To avoid downtime, servicers will need easy access, too, so establish protocols for that.

4. A successful track record

How long has your potential LED supplier been in business? What are other customers&#; experiences? Will the supplier be around in 10 years? Will they be responsive to any needs you may have after installation?

To ensure you get the best outdoor LED display possible, ask for references and referrals from their previous customers, especially for jobs done five or more years ago, to get insight into the provider&#;s integrity.

5. Attention to safety

To local and state governments, your display brightness can be a major safety concern. A sign that&#;s too bright may distract drivers and make it difficult to drive at night. Check if your LED display has an auto-dimming capability to lower the screen&#;s brightness relative to surrounding light, which should minimize it at night, saving power and keeping drivers&#; eyes on the road.

The materials used in the LED screen and its enclosure can also lower the risk of dangerous signage failures and assuage any safety concerns. Look for products certified by Underwriters Laboratory (UL), which imposes strict safety requirements.

6. Price and warranty

You may be tempted to choose the least expensive LED signage option, but you&#;re likely to get what you pay for. Low-cost suppliers use lower-quality materials &#; not military-grade components. Their design teams may not ensure the safety and longevity of your signage. And they may under-specify the screen&#;s performance to lower the cost.

Many signage suppliers offer a warranty, but check the fine print to make sure you understand the exceptions and limitations. Here&#;s where you may be better off going with a trusted brand, even if it costs a bit more.  Ultimately, smartly designed and well-built LED advertising screens will deliver greater overall savings.

7. Choose the best integrator

Your LED supplier may not always be the organization that physically installs the screen. In many cases, you may end up hiring an architect, consultant or project manager to oversee or carry out the installation. Is your LED supplier ready and willing to work with these managers?

You may also simply want to appoint an installer who can manage the entire project. Can your supplier suggest a qualified installer? Again, check their references and ask about the success of previous installations.

8. Visual quality

Outdoor signage is meant to draw the attention of passersby and communicate a message about your brand. The vividness of the image has a significant impact on how that message is received. Your outdoor LED signage should be bright and vibrant, and it should display colors accurately. Skin tones that look washed out, for example, will draw negative attention, so check the LED supplier spec sheet to be sure the display shows true-to-life color.

Another key consideration is pixel pitch, in other words, the space between RGB pixels. It&#;s important you choose a vendor that will match the right pixel pitch for the viewing distance. Over specifying the pitch may cost more, but if the pixel pitch is too large, the visual quality may suffer.

Establishing an outdoor LED signage solution can be a daunting task with many moving parts &#; and concerns about visual quality, cost, safety and reliability. Starting with these eight tips in mind, you&#;ll be prepared to ask the right questions and set your project up for success.
