Magna International Inc.

Oct. 28, 2024

Magna International Inc. is known for its wide array of innovative solutions in the automotive industry. With a legacy that dates back to its incorporation as Magna Electronics Corporation Limited in November, the company has expanded its operations significantly over the years. It started with automotive operations that included stamping and electro-mechanical components, and through strategic acquisitions and developments, it has evolved into a major player in the automotive sector. In January, the company changed its name to Magna International Inc. and sold its aerospace and defense divisions to concentrate efforts on the automotive market. This pivotal decision was followed by the reorganization of its manufacturing divisions as Automotive Systems Corporations, positioning itself as a service supplier for all automotive systems. One of its notable achievements includes the co-design and co-development of the built-in child safety seat, which has been honored by the Smithsonian Institute as the most innovative product of its time. ### Key Acquisitions and Growth In May, Magna made significant strides by acquiring Cosma International Inc. and Tesma International Inc., further solidifying its presence in the automotive sphere. By November, it had acquired an additional 11.4% stake in Atoma International Inc., expanding its market reach. The company's acquisition strategy continued robustly, as it acquired KS Automotive-Sicherheitstechnik GmbH (60%) and Porsche GmbH's Zillerle (74%), enhancing its safety technology capabilities. The subsequent spin-off of Tesma International Inc. was another strategic move to streamline operations. ### Expanding into New Markets Throughout the years, Magna International continued to diversify its portfolio. It secured acquisitions such as Temic Bayern Chemie airbag GmbH (25.1%), Marley Automotive Components Group, and Garadon Automotive Components Group. These acquisitions fueled growth and propelled Magna into new market segments. In February, the acquisition of Roltra Motor SpA expanded its supplier network, followed by May's acquisition of TRIMA Automotive Inc., a North American stamping and plastic components manufacturer. This trend of judicious growth saw the establishment of a testing and development center with TRW and ACTS in Germany. ### Engaging in Innovative Partnerships Magna has also embraced cooperative endeavors, as demonstrated by its intention to form a working relationship with Covisint, a global internet-based B2B exchange. The company's efforts included acquiring Donnelly Corporation in October to create an extensive exterior and interior mirrors group with advanced lighting and electronics capabilities. As Magna continued to advance, it announced significant partnerships and acquisitions. In June, the establishment of Magna Powertrain (Changzhou) Co. Ltd. in China marked its expansion into the Asian market. Subsequent acquisitions like BluWav Systems LLC focused on developing electric and energy management systems for various electric vehicles. ### Strategic Divestitures While Magna has made numerous acquisitions, it has also strategically divested certain divisions. In August, the decision to divest its interiors business to Grupo Antolin-Irausa, S.A. for approximately USD 549 million allowed Magna to refocus on its core automotive competencies. Most recently, partnerships with LG Electronics led to the creation of LG Magna e-Powertrain, focusing on powertrains for electric vehicles. The acquisition of Veoneer’s Active Safety business and Optimus Ride exemplifies Magna's commitment to innovation in autonomous vehicle technologies and active safety products.
