Surface Drill Rigs | A Wide Range of Machines

Surface drill rigs are essential for blast hole drilling in construction, quarrying, and open-pit mining, accommodating a hole range of 27-229 mm. We provide an extensive assortment of surface drilling equipment on the market, categorized into four main product families. These include the highly advanced and automated hydraulic drilling rigs in the SmartROC family, the versatile FlexiROC family, the robust PowerROC family, and finally, the pneumatic drill rigs within the AirROC family.

Our surface drilling machines are outfitted with premier components including Epiroc rock drills. They can be tailored with numerous optional equipment, such as the Hole Navigation System (HNS) for precise parallel holes and the Rod Handling System (RHS) that simplifies the manual handling of drill pipes and rods. We also provide drilling tools compatible with all our surface drill rigs.

Sandvik introduces Top Hammer XL, a fully optimized top hammer system for large hole size drilling in surface mining

Introduction of Top Hammer XL

Top Hammer XL is the latest marvel in surface top hammer drilling from Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions. Designed for large-scale quarry and surface mining applications, this innovative drilling system enables faster, more fuel-efficient, and cost-effective drilling for holes ranging from 140 to 178 millimeters (5.5 to 7 inches) in diameter. The system's core components – a new Pantera™ DP1600i drill rig, RD1840C rock drill, and LT90 rock tools – are meticulously optimized to work in unison for exceptional drilling performance.

Enhanced Efficiency and Sustainability

Sandvik’s Top Hammer XL represents a groundbreaking advancement in top hammer drilling technology, offering a compelling alternative to down-the-hole (DTH) drilling for larger holes. The system's expansion supports up to a 178-millimeter hole size and is designed to be more efficient and sustainable. Apart from delivering excellent drilling results, it offers the benefit of lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions, aligning with Sandvik's commitment to safety and sustainability in business operations.

Comprehensive System Optimization

The heart of the Top Hammer XL system resides in Sandviken, Sweden, and Tampere, Finland, where all components are meticulously designed and manufactured to function seamlessly together, producing high productivity and optimal drilling outcomes. "A key asset of the Top Hammer XL drilling system is the mutual optimization of its three main components – the drill rig, rock drill, and rock tools," states Jukka Siltanen, Product Line Manager, Rock Drills at Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions.

Proven Efficiency That Makes a Difference

The innovative efficiency of the Top Hammer XL system originates from its three main components working together seamlessly. Extensive field tests, spanning over 100,000 meters of drilling in challenging rock conditions, have demonstrated significant improvements. Results indicate a 50 percent reduction in fuel consumption, 25 percent reduction in total drilling costs, and a 15 percent increase in productivity, compared to traditional DTH drilling methods.

Pantera™ DP1600i – Advanced Drilling Solution
