Testing of Syringes
Syringes are used in a wide variety of applications and come in many shapes and sizes. ZwickRoell offers the right test fixture for your requirements.
Breakaway Force/Glide Force (DIN EN ISO -1, DIN EN ISO and ISO -4)
This test fixture is used to determine the break-away force and glide force of syringes, syringe cartridges, and similar dosimeters. Glide force is tested to DIN EN ISO -1, DIN EN ISO , and ISO -4. The breakaway force and glide force are important parameters used to select the most suitable syringe. These forces may not exceed or fall below certain limits to ensure that a safe drug dose is administered. The forces are influenced by the viscosity of the drug and the size of the cannula.
ZwickRoell's universal test fixture can accommodate all common syringe geometries thanks to its adjustable specimen holder. Specimen diameter adjustment is performed steplessly and tool-free via a handwheel. Optional holders facilitate the testing of specimens without finger grips. ZwickRoell's testXpert II testing software enables you to easily test the maximum force and the average glide force. The integration of a weigh module makes it possible to determine the dosing accuracy of single doses, such as those in insulin cartridges. A camera documents the glide force of the syringe plug. The videoCapture plus option for testXpert II synchronously records the test results and the video signal. Together with the non-contact videoXtens extensometer, continuous measurement of the thickness of the plug is possible.
Benefits/features of the test device for determination of breakaway force:
- Test device consists of a holder below and a die above
- Includes a glass container to collect escaped liquid
- Swiveling guide jaws with two different radii ensure optimal guiding
- Die with concave seat ensures centering of (syringe) plunger
- Customized mounts can be easily attached
- Fixture has apertures for visual monitoring of glide path
- Insertion and removal of specimens via a quick release fastener maintains the specimen diameter setting
- Cartridge holders available as an option for standard sizes 1.5ml and 3.0ml
- testXpert II makes it possible to connect to an optional scale. This means the fixture can also be used for dosing accuracy tests to, for example, DIN EN ISO -3
- A safety door is recommended if testing glass syringes
- This fixture can be used to perform tests on dental cartridges for local anesthesia to DIN EN ISO .
Plunger Actuation Force DIN EN ISO -1
This fixture was developed to determine the force necessary to push the plunger of a sterile single-use syringe to DIN EN ISO -1. The test simulates the conditions of drawing in and expelling the liquid. The test fixture consists of an upper and a lower clamping device to hold the syringe and a height-adjustable fluid reservoir with connecting hose. It can be easily dismantled and cleaned.
Simultaneous Glide Force Tests on Multiple Syringe Systems
This fixture comprises an AllroundLine table top testing machine expanded to 68 test axes to hold the corresponding number of load cells. It is suitable for use both in a laboratory and for in-process monitoring, and is used to test various frictional forces between the syringe plunger and barrel or the sealing rings in the syringe barrels. The syringe holding fixture can accommodate syringes of various sizes, as well as two medium containers for catching the expelled liquid. This fixture can be used to test frictional forces on cartridges. The force sequences can be synchronized thanks to the individual height adjustment feature.

Luer System/Luer Lock Connectors ISO
The Luer cone is a standardized connector system used in tube systems in the medical industry. It is used with items such as cannulae, syringes, catheters, three-way stopcocks, and infusion tubes. The seal is achieved through used of a cone-shaped fitting, called a Luer cone. Furthermore, the Luer lock connector has a threaded sleeve to achieve a tight connection so fluids cannot escape. For quality control of these components, a materials testing machine with superimposed torsion drive is used.
ISO -7 and ISO -20 are the standards used to test a Luer system or Luer lock connector for stability. It is possible to easily determine torques under static axial load with the superimposed axial/torsion drive of a zwickiLine torsion materials testing machine.
ZwickRoell testing solutions to ISO -4
ISO -4 (Prefilled syringes -- Part 4: Glass barrels for injectables and sterilized subassembled syringes ready for filling) defines the following tests:
- C1: Flange breaking resistance
- C2: Luer cone breaking resistance
- E: Glide force test method to evaluate syringe lubrication
- F: Needle penetration test
- G1: Needle pull-out force
- G2: Closure system liquid leakage test
- G3: Luer lock adaptor collar pull-off force
- G4: Luer lock adaptor collar torque resistance
- G5: Luer lock rigid tip cap unscrewing torque
- G6: Pull-off force of the tip cap or the needle shield
ZwickRoell is the first materials testing machine manufacturer that offers a complete portfolio that tests to ISO -4. The interchangeable test fixtures are ideal for various syringe types and ensure that the testing of prefilled syringes is standardized.
