The Ice Sheet

Each curling sheet is a patch of ice, 44.5 metres (146 ft) by 4.3 to 4.75 metres (14 ft 2 in to 15 ft 7 in), with identical sets of circles near each end.

At the centre of the target, which is called the "house," is a "tee line" and small circle called the "button". Around the button are circles of diameters of 1.22 m (4 ft), 2.44 m (8 ft), and 3.66 m (12 ft).

The distance from back line to tee line is 1.83 m (6 ft) and from tee line to hog line is 6.40 m (21 ft).
The hog lines are 24.94 m (72 ft) apart.
The tee lines are 34.75 m (114 ft) apart.
The back lines are 38.40 m (126 ft) apart.

At each end is a "hack," a foothold for players to push off when delivering a curling stone.

The ice is pebbled, rather than smooth. Pebbling is accomplished by sprinkling warm water on the prepared ice surface. The purpose is to give the stones something to grip so that their spin will make them curve; if the ice were perfectly smooth, it would be impossible to curl the stone.

The stone has maximum measurements of 91.4 cm (36 in) in circumference, and 11.4 cm (4 1/2 in) in height.
In Canada and the United States the weight of the stone is almost 20 kg (44 lbs).

Curling is a sport in which two teams of four players each slide (called throwing) 40-pound granite <i>rocks</i> (also called <i>stones</i>) down a sheet of ice toward a target at the other end. Each team tries to get more of its stones closer to the center of the target than the other team. Read on for a complete breakdown of curling’s basic elements.</p>\n<ul class=\"level-one\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"first-para\"><b>Throwing rocks:</b><i> </i>Each player on the team throws (slides) two stones in each end. (An end is similar to an inning in baseball.) Each team throws 8 stones in an end. The players alternate throwing with their <i>opposite number, </i>the player on the other team who plays the same position they do.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"first-para\"><b>Curling rocks:</b> When you throw a rock down the ice, depending on its rotation &#8212; which is applied intentionally &#8212; it will <i>curl, </i>or <i>bend,</i> one way or another. How much (or little) a rock curls or bends, depends largely on the conditions of the playing surface.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"first-para\"><b>Sweeping:</b> Sweeping makes a rock curl less and travel farther. The lead, second, and third all take turns sweeping the rocks. The skip, who is like the team’s quarterback, is the only one who doesn’t regularly sweep stones.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"first-para\"><b>Keeping score:</b> Once all 16 rocks have been thrown down the narrow <i>sheet </i>of ice, the score for that end is counted based on the final positions of the stones in the <i>house</i>, (the group of circles on the ice that looks like a bull’s eye). Only one team can score in an end. A team scores one point for every rock that it has closer to the center of the house than the other team.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"first-para\"><b>Strategy:</b> Generally, the skip determines a rink’s strategy. During the game, the skip stands at one end of the sheet and tells his or her other three players where they should place their shots. A team’s strategy doesn’t always go according to plan! And that’s part of what makes curling so much fun. No two games are alike; the unpredictability is always appealing.</p>\n</li>\n</ul>\n"},{"title":"Great reasons to try the sport of curling","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"<p>Why should you take up curling?
