The curling Sheet

The Ice Sheet

Each curling sheet is a patch of ice, 44.5 metres (146 ft) by 4.3 to 4.75 metres (14 ft 2 in to 15 ft 7 in), with identical sets of circles near each end.

At the centre of the target, which is called the "house," is a "tee line" and small circle called the "button". Around the button are circles of diameters of 1.22 m (4 ft), 2.44 m (8 ft), and 3.66 m (12 ft).

The distance from back line to tee line is 1.83 m (6 ft) and from tee line to hog line is 6.40 m (21 ft).
The hog lines are 24.94 m (72 ft) apart.
The tee lines are 34.75 m (114 ft) apart.
The back lines are 38.40 m (126 ft) apart.

At each end is a "hack," a foothold for players to push off when delivering a curling stone.

The ice is pebbled, rather than smooth. Pebbling is accomplished by sprinkling warm water on the prepared ice surface. The purpose is to give the stones something to grip so that their spin will make them curve; if the ice were perfectly smooth, it would be impossible to curl the stone.

The stone has maximum measurements of 91.4 cm (36 in) in circumference, and 11.4 cm (4 1/2 in) in height.
In Canada and the United States the weight of the stone is almost 20 kg (44 lbs).
